Brian Rich with Richaven Architecture & Preservation will discuss what is common among building envelope consulting is our intent to design an envelope system that captures the goals of the designers while following best practices in compliance with the energy codes, principles of building science, and practicalities of modern building construction, budgets, schedules, materials availability and more. But old buildings are different, more complex, and subtle. The design is already done, the materials already delivered to the job site, and the building already built. This presents anther whole new level of complexity because there is history behind that building, flaws in those materials, and modern interventions and requirements to be met. Rehabilitation of old and historic building envelopes is challenged by new code requirements and project goals. This presentation will examine some of those situations, issues involved, and ways in which conflicting requirements were prioritized and, often, compromised, to develop future-proof envelope solutions.
